Ingrid Jensen Plays Kenny Wheeler

22 April 2016

Ingrid Jensen & Steve Treseler Play Kenny Wheeler

Set List: Old Time (2.18), 5 for six (12.48), Kind Folk (19.39), Gentle Piece/Old Ballad (30.46), Everybody’s Song But My Own (46.31), Ingalude/Foxy Trot (58.57)

Ingrid Jensen & Steve Treseler are joined by Geoffrey Keezer, Jon Wikan, Martin Wind and Katie Jacobson to celebrate the music of Kenny Wheeler filmed by Jazz Night in America and NPR in Seattle. Ingrid  has often cited Wheeler as a significant musical influence and following his death in 2014, she teamed up with Seattle-based saxophonist to revisit his music and write music inspired by him.

Wheeler was as revered for his composing as his playing. His poignantly harmonised pieces were eventually played all over the world, studied assiduously on college courses and sometimes embellished with lyrics. Wheeler was legendarily shy, with a capacity to denigrate his own work and be astonished by anyone else’s interest in it. For a man fascinated by the subject of losers (his first album, made under John Dankworth’s wing in 1968, took the windmill-tilter Don Quixote as its theme), his achievements were immense. – John Fordham, The Guardian
