Musician Profile: Chris Sharkey
29 August 2016
Guitarist Chris Sharkey will tour with Ellery Eskelin’s Trio in October 2016.
Best known for playing with Acoustic Ladyland, trioVD and Shiver, Sharkey is a musician as versatile as he is innovative, equally comfortable in completely free improvisation as he is in rock and electronic music.
Chris is also very passionate about teaching. In his own words, his teaching focuses on an “experimental, collaborative approach… rediscovering a sense of fun in music education while at the same time engaging in progressive concepts of music-making.” He has taught and led workshops both in the UK and abroad in Norway and France.
One of Sharkey’s most frequent music collaborators is pianist Matt Bourne, who is the third member of Eskelin’s trio. Adding one of the greatest living improvisers to an already blossoming partnership is surely a recipe for great things.
Sharkey is at the cutting-edge of contemporary improv-fusion guitar technique, colliding headlong free-jazz phrasing with roaring thrash metal riffs and ghostly electronics”
John Fordham – The Guardian
“… astonishing technique that produces a vast array of otherworldly sounds from his battered looking Fender Strat, creating a torrent of angular flurries, gut-wrenchingly heavy, chugging, riffs and spaced out looping. He’s one of the most exciting young guitarists on the UK scene, and one that might just find fans in both free jazz and avant metal camps.”
