Musician Profile: Andy Champion

Double bassist Andy Champion will work with Ingrid Jensen during her Orpheus Project tour in May/June 2016.

Andy Champion has been a central figure in North East jazz scene for the last decade, working extensively in the UK and abroad as a double bassist for small groups and jazz orchestras. For many years, Andy held the bass chair in Voice of the North, the jazz orchestra led by composer John Warren which performed at jazz festivals and venues with featured artists including Jason Yarde. In addition to this and work with his own group, ACV, Andy has also performed and recorded with Bob Mintzer, Andy Sheppard, Marilyn Crispell and Marc Ducret. In 2013, he was selected to be part of the Take Five professional development scheme run by Serious for outstanding young jazz musicians.

Aside from his work in jazz, Andy plays in a number of improvised music settings including SHIVER with Chris Sharkey. He also plays electric bass for funk/soul outfit Smoove & Turrell.

Champion has also been involved in supporting the North East jazz scene as a promoter, working with vocalist Zoe Gilby to run Splinter @ The Bridge for a number of years.
