Musician Profile: Tim Giles
17 March 2016
Award-winning drummer and composer Tim Giles will tour with Ingrid Jensen’s quartet in May/June 2016.
An exceptionally busy musician, Tim Giles is perhaps best known for his work with James Allsop and their group, Fraud. Fraud won the BBC Jazz on 3 Award for Innovation, as well as Best New Act at the Ronnie Scott’s Awards and a nomination for BBC Jazz Award’s Album of the year.
From his musical beginnings in Suffolk, Tim was recognised as a serious talent. While still at school, saxophonist Iain Ballamy heard his trio and invited him to join his project Nascent Ants for a Ronnie Scott’s residency. By 16, Tim had left school and moved to London to work as a musician full-time.
Tim has played with a number of established bands and artists including Julian Arguelles, Ben Lamdin’s Nostalgia 77, James Allsopp’s The Golden Age of Steam, Stan Sulzmann’s Neon Quartet and Neon Orchestra, Iain Ballamy, Ed Jones, Matt Bourne and Jamie Cullum, also co-leading the bands Leverton Fox and The Twelves. He leads drumming and jazz workshops across the UK, and is also a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique.
One of Tim’s regular musical collaborators is guitarist Jez Franks, confirming that Ingrid’s quartet will be a force to be reckoned with.
